Was the CCP Birth Certificate Investigation Pay to Play?

Zullo Behind bars

Zullo behind bars?

Morgan Loew, an investigative reporter for Phoenix CBS affiliate KPHO-TV, presented a devastating piece last night on Mike Zullo and the sham Cold Case Posse investigation into President Obama’s long form birth certificate. The segment included an interview with Brian Reilly, the person who first presented the idea for the investigation  to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Brian’s wife Denise Reilly.

The Reillys repeated many of the allegations against Zullo that Brian had previously related when he has called RC Radio. The most interesting and troublesome new allegation in the report was that a Birther litigant from New Jersey, William Wolf, had written a personal check for $10,000 to Mike Zullo. According to Morgan Loew the late Mr. Wolf had supplied a “dossier of evidence” to Zullo and the CCP to help the investigation. Zullo had previous denied had had

Wolf at the time of the donation also was suing the Hawaii DoH to obtain a copy of President Obama’s long form birth certificate. The case was Wolf v Fuddy. All the case documents are available at Jack Ryan’s SCRIBD page here and here. Mr. Wolf lost the case and also was denied on appeal. The courts ruled he was not entitled to receive a certified copy of the President or any one else’s birth records under the Hawaii open records laws. Wolf is notable in that he was one of the few Birther litigants to actually hire a real law firm for his case.

These two video’s of Morgan Loew’s segment are available on the KPHO web site:

Birther posse chief: I accepted $10,000 from source and Former posse members expose birther investigation

The revelations that Mike Zullo personally profited at least $11,500 from the CCP investigation are startling to say the least and may cross the line of illegality. (Mike Zullo previously admitted that he received checks that amounted to approximately $1500 from the sale of an eBook version of the Cold Case Posse interim report on Amazon).  Zullo also told Brian Reilly that before he left the Posse that over $80,000 had been raised. We don’t know what happened to any of that money. We don’t know how much has been donated since then and donations are still being actively solicited even now. (See below)

These revelations  beg the question: was the Cold Case Posse investigation pay to play? Was the way to get your evidence or your point of view  included to grease the palms of Mr. Zullo?

Zullo responded to Morgan Loew’s request for a comment only after he was confronted with evidence of the $10,000 check. Zullo acknowledged that he had received the money but claimed that it was a personal gift from Mr. Wolf. Does Mr. Zullo want us to believe Wolf would just happen to give $10,000 to a used car dealer in Cave Creek, AZ?

Was the direction the investigation went determined by money and politics? Or was it about getting to the truth as both Arpaio and Zullo have claimed? Most importantly, how could Zullo impartially and objectively examine any evidence provided by Wolf  after being given a $10,000 “gift”?

This might explain why the CCP has consistently refused to look at evidence that contradicted the conclusion they seemed destined to reach. It would explain why the Posse refused to talk to author of Was Barack Obama’s Birth Certificate a Fraud?, John Woodman. The CCP also refused to acknowledge that evidence I and others presented that a simple work flow using a Xerox WorkCentre explains all the PDF file anomalies. I think I know why. The CCP never was and still is not conducting a real investigation. It is a political action designed to keep the Birther movement alive, fill Joe Arpaio’s campaign coffers, and benefit pretend law enforcement officer Mike Zullo.

Who else involved in the investigation was paid? How much? We know Zullo told Reilly “We need to find a way to get you paid”. This was one of the reasons that Reilly gave for leaving the Cold Case Posse. He was rightly concerned about the appearance of volunteers being paid to conduct a supposedly serious and impartial investigation.

Who else profited from the “investigation”? It is certain that Zullo’s co-author Jerome Corsi did. What about Mark Gillar who produced the video with the faked race codes and other videos used in both CCP news conferences? What about the discredited “researchers” like Mara Zebest, Garrett Papit, and Tim Selatey, Jr.? Did they profit?

They answer is we simply do not know. Why? Because despite the fact the Cold Case Posse is registered as a 501(c)(3) organization they have yet to file a single Form 990 with the IRS since incorporating. Zullo claims that the CCP is exempt because it is affiliated with the MCSO, a government agency.  However, the MCSO has stated that they have no oversight at all of CCP financial dealings. Dr. Conspiracy has written several articles about how the CCP wants to have it both ways to avoid disclosure of revenues and expenditures. He even filed a complaint with the IRS about the CCP’s lack of accountability  – Cold Case Posse referred to IRS for failure to file Form 990

Reporter Loew went to Mr. Zullo’s home with a camera crew and attempted to ask Zullo about why the Posse was the only such MCSO Posse not to file the required form 990.

This interesting exchange occurred:

Loew: You’re running a non profit and you won’t disclose how much money …Why won’t you tell us how much money this nonprofit has made?

Zullo: I just don’t have to.

Loew: But what’s wrong with full disclosure?

Zullo: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with full disclosure. It’s just that I don’t have to.

I suppose full disclosure and accountability are just not your style are they Mr. Zullo? Nope, those are for the little people.

We hope Mr. Loew follows up on his efforts to “follow the money” at the CCP. I will reach out to Mr. Zullo to appear with Brian Reilly on a future episode of RC Radio to address the allegations in Mr. Loew’s report.

I think you should attack the argument, not the arguer.
It doesn’t matter who got money from whom, we had to find the
errors in their presentations and arguments nevertheless.

  2. David Bryan says:

Zullo needs to go back to Hawaii. He’s looking a bit pasty-faced there.

  3. Jim says:

A 3 year stretch at Sheriff Joe’s tent city will bring all that color right back…look just like the underwear he’ll be wearing. 😀

  4. ducktape says:

gsgs, the CCP arguments have already been thoroughly debunked. Perhaps that’s the way it’s done in your country, although I doubt it. But in the US, the concept of paying someone to have a law enforcement agency investigate is called bribery. Maybe you could look it up in your dictionary if you’re unfamiliar with it.

  5. point3r says:

As far as I can tell, had Zullo been a real cop that’s a Class 4 Felony reight there. 1 to 3.75 years for a first time offender.

But since Zullo’s not a cop, just a nice guy receiving “gifts” he’s off the hook.

  6. ArthurWankspittle says:

Interesting point by point3r there. As the money went across state borders, can someone make a federal complaint about an apparent law enforcement officer receiving an apparent bribe?

  7. Adrianinflorida says:

Hey, if only the Congressmen snared in the ABSCAM investigation had simply said that those ‘Sheiks’ had offered to give them gifts, not bribes, things might have worked out better for them. Love the photo of Reichmarshal Zullo behind the bars of the gate…..A view he may be seeing in a daily basis soon.

I have attacked the argument in great detail on this blog as has NBC and others like John Woodman. I doubt it is worthwhile to continue that much more. Zullo technical arguments such as he as actually made are in shambles and have been completely debunked. He is never going to debate us on technical grounds. He knows that is hopeless.

I disagree on your second point. It does matter who got money from whom and how much. I didn’t make a dime on any of the research I have done. John Woodman wrote a book that sold some copies but he was not pretending to run criminal investigation either. People running criminal investigations do not take money from people interested in a certain outcome. You must understand that don’t you?

  9. Jim Youngblood says:

Zullo has claimed the $10,000 dollars was a PERSONAL GIFT from Mr. Wolf. That being so, it has nothing to do with the CCP investigation regardless of whether Mr. Wolf gave information to CCP or not. Unfortunately, Mr. Wolf is dead and cannot confirm but Zullo that it was personal gift from Mr. Wolf as a friend. He explained this in the email. As far what Brian Reilly has to say differently, he doesn’t have any proof and has been be discredited.

  10. Red Right Hand says:

    …on a future episode of RC Radio…

    Whooo!!

Got some cold cuts, got some cold cuts!….Whooo-Hooo! Gettin’ some cold cuts today…!!!

  11. gsgs says:

they “bribed” him to do what ?
To say something that he doesn’t think is true ?
Or to have better funds to proceed with his investigation
and improve on it ? E.g. by hiring better experts or such.
    I wouldn’t call that bribing.

Did the way he handled that money transfer violate some
US-laws or involve some dishonesty of him ?
That is another issue and has nothing to do with the
birth certificate. And it was not a criminal investigation, afaik.
Before that universe shattering thing which apparently
    wasn’t true.

That they were “biased” towards one direction , that they didn’t
well consider the counterarguments is quite usual in such
discussions. Once people chose one position in a debate they don’t like
to switch and admit they had been wrong.

I was always trying to figure out whether Zullo/Arpaio really believed
what they said. If not, I must attest them quite some actor-skills
which I don’t think they have. OK, let’s say until the election.
What came then with the Xerox and the universe shattering was
    getting a bit bizarre.

  12. It has everything to do with the investigation James. Wolf sent his information to the CCP which then used it. He had an active birther case going on during this. Are you claiming it was a reward for using his material? It’s a bribe plain and simple. You have to either accept that Zullo isnt a real cop or accept that he took a bribe which no straight laced cop would do.

  13. He didn’t “hire” better “experts”. Zullo used the same stale experts that had been around the birther universe for quite some time. How exactly is not looking at real evidence something that is usual in such discussions? Anything realistic that destroyed their claims they didn’t look at. They didn’t bother to ever talk to Hawaii until long after they claimed that the birth certificate was a forgery. This isn’t about people choosing a position in a debate. This is about a supposed law enforcement investigation choosing a predetermined conclusion and then fitting the data around it.

  14. Pete says:

Every single bit of information that Zullo has ever presented has been thoroughly debunked, so that’s already covered. Totally.

So, on to whether Zullo can be described as bent.

For a cop to accept a $10,000 “personal gift” from someone with an interest in his investigation is thoroughly crooked. As far as it being a “personal gift,” that’s just total nonsense.

If you accept that totally bullshit logic, then any cop anywhere could accept any amount of money he wanted from drug dealers, the Mafia, or whoever and then just say, “Ah, well, it was just a personal gift.”

“Ah, I got $100,000 from Don Corleone. Well, it was just a personal gift. Had nothing to do with my Mafia investigation. He just admired me and knew I could use some money.”

    Bullshit.

  15. Icky Woods has to be doing the Cold Cuts Posse shuffle right about now.

  16. Fuzz T Was says:

For those of you who believe Mike Zullo of anyone else on the Sheriff’s Dept has committed misconduct in this matter, instead of just talking about it, do something about it, come forward as an individual or group with your evidence and make a formal complaint.

Write a letter or complete the form on the Dept website and click SEND to email it to the Sheriff’s Internal Affairs staff for review, or use the ‘Printer-friendly’ option to print the form and either mail or hand or deliver it to:

    Internal Affairs
    550 West Jackson St.
    Phoenix, AZ 85003

A member of the Sheriff’s Internal Affairs staff will contact you using information provided. Include contact information, address and phone number. Document the facts you believe constitutes misconduct (who, what, when, where, why). If you prefer to contact Internal Affairs directly you can call (602) 876-5429.

  17. gsgs says:

obviously it was a political thing, not a “cop” – thing.
And it was clear from the beginning that some wealthy
Reps. were putting money into it.
Weren’t they even openly asking for donations ?

  18. Weren’t they even openly asking for donations ?

Yes, there was always donation link on the MCSO web page (it is still there). Of course, no real LE body would ever solicit donations for an investigation. What makes this different is the amount and that it was given personally to Zullo because of the work he was doing with the CCP. There is no other explanation for the gift.

  19. gsgs says:

I think Zullo was not into this to earn money – so much work.
It was the typical Obama-hating thing, that you see so often in the forums.
I remember his talk with Alex Jones about conservative values

  20. ArthurWankspittle says:

“I suppose full disclosure and accountability are just not your style are they Mr. Zullo? Nope, those are for the little people.”
And non-pure-white presidents, don’t forget them.

“For those of you who believe Mike Zullo of anyone else on the Sheriff’s Dept has committed misconduct in this matter…”
But we all know Zullo isn’t LE so why would we waste MCSO time? MCSO have already said the Continuous Con Posse has nothing to do with them and I’m confident they will have a lawyer available to make that case should it ever be required.

There is no doubt Zullo hates the President enough to be in this charade for that alone but consider this:

Zullo apparently has no other occupation other than being a pretend law enforcement officer. He has had four different careers in the last 30 years and none presently. He is either living off his parents’ estate or being funded by sugar daddies like Bill Wolf. There would be nothing wrong with this per se if he were just another citizen Birther. However. he has presented himself as the leader of a law enforcement investigation by a real law enforcement agency. Sheriff Arpaio has supported and endorsed that view when it suited him.

I think there is strong circumstantial evidence that Zullo has been able to parlay a fun hobby into a good living.

    • gsgs says:

I think he could have earned more with almost anything –
      (well, except computer-stuff ;-))
how many hours did he say he spent on this ?
He did not pretend to be “law enforcement”

  22. Yes he has pretended to currently being a law enforcement officer. He once was a cop in a small town decades ago. He holds no rank in the mcso. He is not law enforcement under Arizona statutes. He never corrects people like gallups who call him lieutenant.

    • gsgs says:

remember how much he emphasised in 2013 that now it were even criminal, the sheriff’s office
were involved (–>universe shattering) . Suggesting, before it was not.

“He did not pretend to be “law enforcement””
    Really?
    http://www.obamaconspiracy.org/2014/11/mike-zullos-business-card/
And why would he need to go round flashing a deputy badge if he wasn’t law enforcement?

  24. GSGS they’ve emphasized off and on over the last 3 years that it wasn’t a criminal investigation but then it was and wasn’t, etc. Read the timeline.

I expected as much from you JY. Let’s assume for a minute that Presdient Obama made a $10,000 donation to CRS attorney Jack Maskell to care of his ailing mother. Would you make a similar claim that the donation was strictly altruistic and was not made quid pro quo? Come on and be honest for just once in your life JY.

Also have you considered that the donation made by Wolf may have helped Mike Zullo afford to pay for in home care for his mother so he could take the out of town trips to Hawaii and Washington state that he took during the same period of time? I bet you never thought of that did you JY?

Apparently CBS 5 thought enough of Mr. Reilly’s credibility to interview him and televise the interview to about 1.8 million households in the greater Phoenix area. And Mr. Zullo confirmed that he accepted the $10,000 payment. Reilly sounds pretty credible to me.
